Although, the digital divide in the U.S. has decreased through innovative nationwide efforts to increase utilization, there are still many families that do not have access to the Internet, more particularly broadband. Libraries continue to chip away at this problem, but lack resources to provide equity. Economically stressed families do not have equal access to internet media outlets, let alone Spanish language Internet services. This decreases both access to alternative perspectives on issues as well as access to jobs and economic opportunities. Print media provided by small newspapers such as The Weekly Issue El Semanario are the last defenders of free speech but are also being affected by harsh economics, leaving citizens to the whims of mega corporations that control messaging. Small local newspapers continue to fill a void. Your contribution will keep media alive in economically struggling communities.
